Waterfowl Migrants and Shorebird Sightings with Scott
Saturday, January 29 — Two Sessions: @10:00AM and @1:00PM
Come bird watching with us on the LI Sound and Manursing Lake
This is the right time to observe both types of birds in action, from the brackish waters of the lake to the salty shoreline adjacent to the Long Island Sound. Please bring binoculars and dress for the weather. There is both a morning session from 10am -11:30am and an afternoon session from 1pm – 2:30pm.

Waterfowl BioBlitz
Come ready with the iNaturalist app for a waterfowl ID blitz. This blitz helps the Sanctuary to identify bird populations, previously unknown bird species, and track migration patterns. This program is great for beginners and advanced birders. Make sure to join our projects on iNaturalist and you could win some great prizes! Please bring binoculars and dress for the weather.

Invasive Plant Removal
Help us remove invasive species plants and begin the restoration of native habitats in the Sanctuary. Tools and equipment are provided. Focus species include linden viburnum, Siebold’s viburnum, Chinese fountaingrass, knotweed, and mile-a-minute. Qualifies for service credit hours. Please bring work gloves.

Exploring the Geology of the Shoreline
We will discover, collect and dissect some of the geological historical formations of Read Sanctuary and the Long Island Shoreline. A nice travel log through the formation of part of the east coast.

Volunteer Cleanup with The WPF

We will seek out examples of how creatures great and small cope with the signs of winter. From mammals, birds, insects and aquatics, we will explore them all. Hand lenses provided.

Fairy Tales and Trails- Winter Fairy House Extravaganza
Do faeries exist? We will learn the folklore behind the myths and legends, while constructing our own world involving these mystical beings. Fun for kids. All items and props will be provided. Please come with a positive nature!

Invasive Plants and Local Ecology
Are all plants good? No. Some plants are actually driving out other plants and dominating spaces once populated by a diverse array of native plants and animals. Learn about a variety of common and uncommon invasive plants that are found in our area and how they are hurting the biodiversity of the Sanctuary. Bring your questions!

It has become a seasonal tradition at Read Sanctuary to visit this wonder and utilize some of the materials that can be made out of this grass. We will create a variety of items, many that you are welcome to take home with you. Come one come all.

Vernal Equinox- Spring Soil Defrost
What’s happening with the soil as we begin to defrost from Winter? How does the soil affect the plants, animals, and fungi in the Sanctuary? How can we use this knowledge to preserve and improve habitats in our own backyards? Join a park naturalist to ask questions and learn more about the importance of soil in our daily lives.

Early Bird Migrants
We will seek out some of the earlier warbler migrants, as well as staying in tune with the backyard and aquatic birds. Please bring binoculars.

Early Spring Scavenger Hunt
We will search for natural signs and items that have been placed in “treasure boxes”. This is a fun way for kids to find clues and ideas that will help educate them about their natural surroundings.
