Here’s a quick look at what’s happening at the sanctuary this fall!
SEPTEMBER
17 Saturday- New York State Beach/Shoreline Cleanup
Come help beautify the picturesque views of the shoreline of Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary. This is in conjunction with the NYS Chapter of the American Littoral Society. Great for volunteer service credit hours. All tools will be provided.
10 am – 3 pm
17 Saturday- Algae by the Seaside
Look for algae along our seashore and collect some samples for further studying and uses. Learn about the amazing benefits of algae and how they support our marine ecosystem.

17 Saturday- Fall Seining by the Sound
Early fall is the peak observation time for a variety of saltwater creatures. We will use dip nets and a long seining net to catch, study and release creatures in our beautiful Long Island Sound. Please dress in clothes that can get wet.

22 Thursday – Wilderness Chamber Players Concert
Fall into fall with a a short concert on the nature center porch. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the sounds of the Wilderness Chamber Players as we welcome the Autumnal Equinox.

24 Saturday- Rolling Rocks and Lifting Logs
Using a hand lens, we will observe the creatures of the soil that are often overlooked forgotten about. This is fun for kids.

OCTOBER
1 Saturday- FRIENDS OF READ ANNUAL MEETING
All are welcome to come hear how the year has progressed at the sanctuary and to share a complimentary lunch following the meeting. If you plan to join us for lunch, please let us know by Tuesday, September 27. Email rsvp to friendsofreadws@gmail.com.

1 Saturday- Seining, The Last Hurrah of the Brackish Water Creatures
This will be the last chance to catch the salt and possibly freshwater creatures close in a lake ecosystem with a 25-foot seining net. Fun for kids of all ages (including adults). Please dress to get wet.

8 Saturday- Seining, The Last Hurrah of the Tidal Creatures
This will be the last chance to catch the saltwater creatures close to the shoreline with a 25-foot seining net. Fun for kids of all ages (including adults). Please dress to get wet.

16 Sunday- Changing of the Seasons Seminar
As Autumn becomes in full swing, we will see the change of the guard, from tree leaves to ground cover to dead logs. Come learn the secrets of the seasons. Hand lenses will be provided.

22 Saturday- One and All with the Clay
We will harvest natural clay from a habitat within the Sanctuary. You will be allowed to create items of your choice (pots, animals, etc.), and take them home with you.

30 Sunday- Phytoremediation
The way that green plants take pollutants and waste by removing the toxins, stabilizing them and breaking them down. Read has many examples of this, as they will be explored.

NOVEMBER
6 Sunday- Pre-Thanksgiving Seminar
What’s the first thing we think of with Thanksgiving? Turkeys! We will look at their identification, behavior, followed by a hike to find them.

13 Sunday- Invasives R’Us
For those who have visited Read Sanctuary before, the awareness of the presence of invasive plants is known. Learn removal techniques and identification of these problematic plants.

19 Saturday- Late Fall Shelter Building
A popular program that brings people together by working together to create a structure in less than 2 hours! The kids will love it.

DECEMBER
3 Saturday- Submit Photography for Read Photography Exhibit
People can submit photographs of Wildlife and Natural Landscapes. Photographs must be framed and wired for hanging. One photograph per person please!

10 Saturday- First Photography Exhibit for Read Sanctuary
Come and view peoples’ talents and love for wildlife photography. Refreshments will be provided. Exhibit will be on display through January 26th, 2023.
